I think infrastructure like this is worth funding, especially given that Neckwork is already serving the explorer, API, historical chain data and other services used by Hydration.\n\nOne concern I have for the longer term is dependency on a small number of core contributors and infrastructure operators. Since Neckwork is becoming increasingly important to Hydration, I would like to see future funding gradually improve redundancy, geographic distribution, documentation and the ability for others to self host or take over parts of the infrastructure if necessary.\n\nIt would also be useful in future proposals to separate infrastructure costs from development and maintenance costs, and perhaps include some simple usage metrics. That would make recurring Treasury spending easier for the community to evaluate over time.\n\nI also have a question about Subscan. If Neckwork now provides the explorer, full historical data, account data, events, governance data and APIs, do we actually still need to continue paying for Subscan in the future?\n\nIf there is significant overlap, could Neckwork eventually replace Subscan entirely? That could make the higher cost of Neckwork easier to justify, since part of the expense would effectively replace an existing Treasury expense rather than simply adding another one.\n\nOverall I am supportive. Fair concerns.\n\nOn the takeover risk, the Hydration team already has it. They've been running Neckwork for their own experiments and forked it for a Basilisk explorer, so the stack sits in more hands than just mine at this point. If I went away tomorrow they could keep it running on short notice. That's the reason it's open source and self-hostable instead of a service I sell you access to.\n\nSplitting infrastructure from development in the next proposal makes sense, I'll do that. Rough number in the meantime: a indexer node runs $300 to $800 a month, depending on the ISP, the location, what the box has to do, whether it also carries the archive node, and what kind of SLA you want on it. The rest of the ask is development and maintenance. Usage metrics I'll keep reporting the way I did here.\n\nOn Subscan, that one answered itself. They shut down their Hydration support after #384 was rejected, so there's no overlap left to pay for. Subsquare is the remaining one, and yes, that's where this can go.
